There was nothing but 20 feet of air separating me from these guys.
Despite the looks on their faces, they really were friendly.

Bienvenidos a Chilcabamba
Despite the look on his face in this photo, this was another typical friendly and affectionate dog.

This is a
Vicuņa
near the Cerro Chimborazo base camp, Ecuador.
They are currently rather plentiful in the mountains at 12 to 16,000 feet.  There used to be a
lot of them in Ecuador and then they all seemed to disappear. Recently, they were reintroduced
from Peru. They are related to llamas and alpacas but are, in my opinion, considerably more
elegant looking. They eat highland grasses. They must spend a lot of time looking for food because
at 16,000 feet there is not a whole lot of anything that's alive, be it of plant or animal origin.
Mostly just foolish humans who seem to want to come up this high for some reason.
And probably provide amusing entertainment for the vicuņas. I did not have a telephoto
lens with me but was able to very slowly get to within 30 or 40 feet of this guy.
They are notoriously shy.
